The History of Court Yard Catering
From the age of seven, owner Gene Hamrock
grew up working in small, hometown grocery store. Later, his
career would take him to Westinghouse, where he would work
as a nuclear engineer and travel extensively. Yet Gene always
loved his initial experience with hometown service.
There came a day when Gene made the decision,
along with his wife Rhonda, to settle down from traveling
and open a small grocery store, returning to his roots and
the life he loved as a boy. The opportunity came when the
Isaly’s in Greensburg went up for sale. Their real estate
agent, who had been on the lookout for a grocery store, came
to Gene and Rhonda with an opportunity to acquire both a small
line of groceries and a restaurant, -- that was Isaly’s.
The timing was close. The bank next door
wanted to purchase the building and close the restaurant,
but the owners of the store wanted it to remain in business.
Gene and Rhonda had a decision to make, and only a couple
of days to do it. Although they had not intended to become
restaurateurs, and had no experience on that end of things,
they made the leap.
“We decided they were not going to move
the county courthouse, which was right across the street,
and we inherited two great employees, Annie and Doris. We
couldn’t have done it without them. From the first day,
everything was made from scratch; that’s how they cooked,
and that’s how they taught us.”
-- Gene and Rhonda Hamrock, Owners
Court Yard Catering and Specialties
operated out of its Greensburg location for 8 years, serving
a pizza style lunch service to the court house crowd and providing
a small line of groceries. In time, Gene and Rhonda stretched
their wings and began working a few catering and concession
contracts. It all began when a fireman friend mentioned the
need for concessions at a local celebration. They provided
a booth and made more in a few days than in two weeks at the
restaurant. After that there was nothing but growth.
Gene and Rhonda’s “made from
scratch,” irresistible home cooked foods became an immediate
hit. Their 70 hour work weeks quickly became 120 hour work
weeks.
Over the years, the business grew tremendously,
but things did change. While they didn’t move the courthouse,
evolving security measures and the relocation of many agencies
out of the courthouse and out of downtown Greensburg meant
fewer and fewer customers at the old Isaly’s location.
THANK YOU
We wanted to send a special thanks to all of you for doing a wonderful job for
our wedding!
Cathy and Steve Rugh
The decision was made to move their business
closer to their Scottdale, PA home. In 1997, Court
Yard Catering and Specialties purchased a building
in Scottdale, remodeled it and turned it into a commissary.
Next, they built a building to handle concessions, and by
2003 had outgrown that building and began construction on
another.
2008 marks their 20th year of service to
Westmoreland County, Fayette County, and the Pittsburgh area.
“We are now into our
second generation, with two of our three children very interested
in continuing the family tradition. We couldn’t have
done it without them. All three have been a tremendous help
over the years. Here’s a big thank you to our kids:
Vaughn, 25, Brandon, 23, and Paige, 19."
